Welcome To Somers Point, New Jersey

Somers Point Photo Slideshow (coming soon)

Somers Point, known as “Somers Plantation” began in 1693 when John Somers, a member of the Quaker Society of Friends, was appointed supervisor of roads and constable by Cape May County Court. Two years later John Somers purchased 3,000 acres of land around Somers Point.

Quaker influence was strong along the Sea Shore Road that ran from Nacote Creek to Somers Point, and John Somers and John Scull held Quaker meetings at the Somers Plantation in 1695. Such meetings were held in private dwellings, and the first Quaker meeting house wasn’t constructed until 1730 in what was then known as Leedsville – now Linwood – on land donated by James Somers, the son of John.

As with the rest of the area, southern New Jersey was originally home to the Lenni-Lenape native Americans before the first European settlers arrived, and when they did come the coast and bays were explored by the Dutch, French, Swedish, Finnish and Portuguese. Henry Hudson sailed by in 1609, and Captain Cornelius Mey sailed into Little Egg Harbor in 1614 and then charted the coast a few years later.

The earliest settlers in the area were whalers, and ship building, mills, iron furnaces and brickyards became major industries in and around Somers Point at that time. The oldest (still standing) building in Somers Point today was built between 1720 and 1726.

The most famous son of Somers Point is Richard Somers who was born in the late 1770’s, became a U.S. Navy midshipman serving during the John Adams administration, and who died a hero’s death in the war against the Barbary pirates.  Somers sailed his ship, the “Intrepid,” into the harbor at Tripoli where pirate gunboats lay at anchor. Loaded with a hundred barrels of gunpowder, 150 shells and iron, the ship exploded sinking many pirate vessels, but Somers and his men were killed in the attack and they are buried on the beach near the walls of Tripoli.

In honor of their sacrifice there is a monument at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and the U.S. Navy has a ship on the line to this day named for Master Commandant Richard Somers who died in Tripoli harbor at the age of 25.

In 1791 the citizens in the area seceded from Gloucester County. In 1812 war was declared against the British and a fort was built on Bay Avenue. The year 1829 saw a visit by John J. Audubon who was on a nature tour. The famous artist sketched birds in the Somers Point area.

Somers Point was incorporated on April 24, 1886, and re-incorporated as a city on April 9, 1902. It may be effectively argued that some towns have all the luck as far as their location is concerned, and Somers Point, New Jersey is one town that has so much going for it that it’s hard to take it all in. First of all it’s a great town with its waterfront on Great Egg Harbor Bay where visitors can enjoy several bay beaches with bathhouses, a baby beach, fishing, picnicking, rafting, and watercraft rentals.

Somers Point is named for founder and harbormaster John Somers whose home, Somers Mansion, dates to 1725 and is the oldest home in Atlantic County (Yes, it’s open for tours!). The town is located right over the bridge from Ocean City, New Jersey and the boardwalk, amusement piers and ocean beaches are a very short drive from Somers Point.

We can’t forget to mention that Somers Point is also right over the Longport bridge from the towns of Longport, Margate, Ventnor, and Atlantic City and all the fun, restaurants, casino gaming and everything else you can do in this beautiful part of coastal New Jersey.

However, please don’t overlook the fact that Somers Point also has great restaurants, art galleries, pubs and nightlife all its own for the young (and young at heart). Somers Point is everything a town should be...and then some!
